Building Better Futures, Strengthening of APBET Schools

In the heart of Soweto’s vibrant community, a remarkable event unfolded at the Soweto Social Hall. School owners, directors, and head teachers, all under the umbrella of the Alternate Provision of Basic Education & Training – Complimentary Schools Association of Kenya (APBET-CSAK), gathered for a day dedicated to Organizational System Strengthening (OSS). This initiative, aimed at enhancing teacher retooling and raising awareness on HIV & AIDS, was supported by the Adopt A School Foundation (AASF).

The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as educators from various informal settlement areas converged to gain new insights and strategies for improving their schools. The focus on OSS was particularly timely, considering the challenges faced by schools in these areas. Strengthening organizational systems equips school leaders with the tools needed to manage their institutions more effectively and sustainably.

Mr. Meshack, Chairman of the Nairobi Region for APBET-CSAK, opened the session with a compelling address, highlighting several milestones achieved by AASF since their partnership began in 2021. These accomplishments have significantly impacted the educational landscape within informal settlements, bringing much-needed support and resources to schools serving some of the most vulnerable populations.

A critical area of focus during the event was teacher retooling. Educators were introduced to innovative teaching methodologies and provided with practical skills to enhance their classroom effectiveness. This retooling is essential to ensure teachers can adapt to the evolving educational needs of their students, particularly in under-resourced settings.

Another pivotal aspect of the gathering was sensitization on HIV & AIDS. Given the prevalence of HIV & AIDS in informal settlements, raising awareness and providing accurate information is crucial. Educators were equipped with the knowledge and resources to educate their students and communities about prevention, treatment, and stigma reduction. This initiative aims not only to protect the health of the teachers but also to foster a supportive and informed community.
